Difference between Contemporary and Modern Art

It is a topic which not many feel necessary to ask as they presume that they know the difference between contemporary and modern art but not exactly though. Contemporary Art may be defined as more of comfortable art which has a social feel to it. It is the art which was, is and will remain forever. Unlike the modern art it appeals to one and all as it is socially more conscious. It is always based on some or the other social topic like feminism, globalization AIDS and multiculturalism etc. The period of contemporary art starts form early 70s and is on till date. Modern art on the other hand was in its full bloom from 1880 and carried its glory till early 70s. Modern art gave the artist creative freedom and made them depict their inner visions to the world differently and let them as innovative as they can with colors.
Indian artists have contributed to both the forms substantially. The whole world knows the way Raja Ravi Varma captured the beauty of a woman in early 90s and today the way M. F. Hussain has spread his thoughts on the canvas. In addition to these renowned epitomes of art there are several other talents with unmatched expertise in water colors, pastel paintings and other forms. Freedom of expression has been a concern in this part of the world which is not appreciated by many. But freedom of expression too should have its limits.

No matter an artwork belongs to which region of the world, great arts have always been appreciated by common people of all over the world. When it comes to the countries that have most outstanding contributions in the modern arts then the name of India comes on the apex position. History says that 'the country of Vedas' has produced a large number of exquisite artworks and majority of them have got huge appreciations in the global arena.
